Grounded theory approaches often involve creating many so-called “open codes”: you review a text line by line and record each newly identified aspect as a separate code. Open Coding Mode is particularly well suited to this type of work. It allows you to create a new code for a selected segment, assign it immediately, and optionally add a code memo and a comment for the coded segment.
Activating Open Coding Mode
To activate the mode, click the
Open Coding Mode icon in the coding toolbar of the “Document Browser.”
Using Open Coding Mode
Using Open Coding Mode is simple: as soon as you release the mouse button after selecting a text segment, a dialog for creating a new code opens. Here, you can:
- Enter a name for the new code.
- Select a color for the code.
- Add an optional code memo to the new code.
- Add an optional comment on the coded segment.
