Lectures

Analogies for Qualitative Data Analysis

Artists and qualitative data analysts should think conceptually, symbolically, and metaphorically to render social insights. In this participatory keynote address, Saldaña presents an array of images and actions for how qualitative researchers conceive qualitative data analysis, ranging from tapestries to detective work, from jigsaw puzzles to traveling, from mosaics to collages. The address offers ways to think about and approach qualitative data analysis through relevant and intriguing analogies for teaching and learning, and for creative renderings of the human condition.

  • Discourse Analysis with MAXQDA

In this session we will talk about using MAXQDA for a Discourse Analysis. After a brief overview of different approaches to discourse, we will explore how the software can support all stages of your project. How to set up and organize your materials? What does coding entail in the context of a discourse analysis? What should you consider when building and organizing a code system? A pivotal aspect of discourse analysis involves recognizing discursive rules that underlie the formulation of statements and observing how these patterns change over time. MAXQDA’s visual tools are great for exploring and showcasing such structures; in this session, we will take a closer look at the cloud and trend features. We will wrap up the session by discussing how to use the Question-Themes-Theories feature to collect and structure the results of your analysis.
