Keynote: Naturalistic or manufactured data in qualitative research?

The vast majority of journal articles assume a consensus about three features of qualitative research [QR]: QR seeks to understand human experience; it treats interviews and focus groups as providing direct access to the contents of people’s heads and it foregrounds the empathetic skills of the researcher to achieve this. In this talk, I review the reasons for this preference and suggest why they are often faulty. All things being equal, QR’s greatest strength is demonstrated in working with naturalistic data including documents, digital data and recordings of interactions. Following this path, we can establish a more fruitful division of labour between qualitative and quantitative work.

Danach heißt es: Daten codiert, was nun?

  • Thematic Analysis with MAXQDA

This Spotlight provides an overview of how MAXQDA’s features can facilitate a thematic analysis, using the phases of Reflexive Thematic Analysis as described by Braun & Clarke (2021) as an example, but adaptable to other types of Thematic Analysis. We consider the use of MAXQDA for familiarizing with qualitative data, coding and retrieving, generating initial themes and refining them, as well as using query tools and visualisations to inform the process and communicate findings.

  • How to write a Paper with MAXQDA

This session is designed to support users in moving from data analysis in MAXQDA to the writing and reporting stage of their research. Many researchers generate rich codes, memos, and insights, but struggle to organize these analytically for papers. In this session, participants will learn how to use MAXQDA’s Memos alongside the Questions-Themes-Theories (QTT) workspace as a structured bridge between analysis and writing. Using MAXQDA’s sample project, I will demonstrate how to set up and work with both a Qualitative QTT worksheet and a Mixed Methods QTT worksheet to organize research questions, themes, interpretations, and other findings. The session will also cover creating summaries, exporting content for writing, and enhancing papers with MAXQDA visuals. By the end of the session, participants will have a wide variety of options for transforming work in MAXQDA into well-organized, written outputs.
