Spreewald ahoy! The VERBI summer field trip 2014

High performance in canoeing – VERBIs Berlin team in action this summer 2014! After 82 km by train VERBI reaches the gate to one of Germany’s most famous forests: The Spreewald. And here it is, waiting for us – boat rental company Bootsverleih Richter in the small city Lübbenau.

All hands on board? Not yet! Some VERBIs discovered a cucumber stall near the boat rental and are tasting some real Spreewald gherkins. What you might not know is that Lübbenau is famous for its cucumber cultivation. Afterwards the whole VERBI team boards a huge canoe and starts paddling through the Spree, the river which runs through the Spreewald.

Passing ducks, small houses, timber bridges, water lilies and dragonflies in all colors, we reach the small Spreewald village “Lehde” where some of the residents are reliant on transportation by boat till today.

DSC01450DSC01442 Even the mail needs to be delivered by boat. Need proof? Here it is! From a restaurant in the middle of the forest we see a German post canoe, carrying mail to the post boxes which are placed right on the river shores. Unbelievable!

Canoe ahoy back to the harbor!

Late sunbeams light up the ground of the river through the treetops. What’s that? Big excitement, when we see the protagonist of a famous Spreewald tale: The ring snake – till today honored and protected as a cultural property of the Spreewald.

A story book ending – what a beautiful canoe trip. Does it really have to end yet? Everyone on board claps their hands when our CEO, Anne Kuckartz, proposes to take the canoe out for another round. No sooner said than done: Just for VERBI our ferryman opens one of the watergates which balances the altitude difference between parts of the water channels so we can see yet another part of the Spree river.

Afterwards it is time to say goodbye to the river, the trees, the animals and our wonderful canoe. Back home to Berlin!
