Deleted codes

27.01.2017, 10:04

Hi

Why, in God's name, is there not a general undo bottom?! I just lost approximately 10 hours of work because I confused 'delete codes' from 'delete coded segments'. Stupid yes, but in a program, that can process such huge data material and so much work, why is there not a function that counters this kind of mistakes?!

Regards
Jeppe

Dear Jeppe,

We are sorry to hear that you have lost parts of your work in MAXQDA due to deleting a code instead of a coding. Of course it is also an aim of our software to avoid such data losses.

Therefore we have implemented an additional security level for deleting codes, coding and memos. Once you try to delete a code, coding, memo, etc. within MAXQDA a window will pop up and you will be ask if you really want to delete this specific element.

We also recommend to backup project files constantly. You can get more information about backups here: http://www.maxqda.com/support/help/maxq ... ojects.htm

There is an undo function for codings in MAXQDA. If you have coded a wrong segment or used the wrong code just click on the undo icon that can be found in the coding toolbar.

Of course we will take your suggestion within the process of developing MAXQDA and will discuss whether the undo function can also be implemented for codes.

All the best for your work and best regards on behalf of the MAXQDA team,
Malte

Hello,

I just went to one of my interviews, "overview of codes", and I saw one wrongly coded segment. I selected to delete it. and you know what? instead what I expected will be the deletion of one coded segment, it has deleted the full category with 1149 codes!.. I have another copy of this file, with almost complete coding for the deleted category, but I am really puzzled, how to insert that into my file - i cannot do merge, as there are more changes done on the current file, and that creates me even more issues when I attempt it... any help greatly appreciated, what could help me not to go back to all data and code those 1149 segments.
best wishes.

I managed to revert with the help of cloud storage, btw, which you don't recommend to use. I stopped synchronization some time after I realized some of the file may not be up to date online, and luckily, they were and I could just simply copy the latest MaxQDA file without my deleted code.

I thank cloud for it this time, but it would really be nice to have some undo for the most critical mistakes. I guess you can keep MaxQDA a lot lighter without this temp memory... but when I lose so much in a second, without the way to return, that makes me not willing to even try any new button on the tool.

Undo/redo for all actions would be great. Better still would be a trash can or 3 for documents, codes, & codings. This is not that hard to do for a decent programmer.

Thanks for the suggestions! We now have a global undo/redo functionality integrated in MAXQDA 2018. As for the idea with the trashcan, I'll forward it to our development team.. hopefully they'll find some time for this, I like the idea
