Filter reports

06.11.2015, 11:47

Hello everyone,

I'm very new to MAXQDA (so please bear with me if this is just a very simple question) and testing some possibilities to see how my work could benefit from this tool.

I work for a humanitarian programme active in various small scale crises around the world. After each intervention, we always hold peer reviews to discuss challenges and lessons learned with project leads. The main "learning points" resulting from these reviews are in one big spreadsheet, that includes several other columns including the country where the crisis happened (which I've imported as a variable).

I've been coding some of the learnings by topic (challenges, positive collaboration experiences, etc) and can now create reports containing some of the learnings from the interventions based on these codes. However, I'd like to be able to filter the reports produced by country, so it only includes coded content connected to the country variable. Is this at all possible?

Thank you very much.

Best regards,
Mattia

Hi Mattia,

we think that the Activation by (document) variables is a good way to go. You can use this feature to activate only the documents that fit user defined variable criteria:

1. Open "Mixed Methods > Activate by document variables" in the main menu

2. Click on the variable "country" in the left pane of the dialog.

3. Click on the blue arrow to transfer the variable in the middle pane, where you can formulate conditions (called "formulas").

4. Select a value in the dropdown list in the right pane for the variable country.

5. Click "Activate" to activate only the chosen documents.

Now you can create reports that only include the "activated documents". Please see here for more information:

There are several additional features which you can use to compare different countries. For instance:

"Mixed Methods > Quote Matrix" where you can define several "formulas" for each country

or

"Visual Tools > Code Matrix Browser" which should be interesting after you have used the "Activatae by variable function" and have chosen the option "Activate and create set" to group your documetns in document sets.

Please let us know, if this information has helped you.

Best regards on behalf of the MAXQDA team,
Stefan
