Transfering project from MaxQDA 2018 to 2020

19.04.2020, 09:16

I have recently moved my license from MAXQDA18 to MAXQDA20.

I'm working with large documents (Parliamentary debates transcripts) for my Case studies, and with MAXQDA18 I had no problem importing those as a Focus group, so I can attribute variables to the speakers.

When I tried to create the projects for the current cased study, each project is around 1000-3000 pages in Word, MAXQDA20 couldn't import the whole document only included a small segment of the document. Thankfully, I still had access to MAXQDA18, which again created the projects and imported documents without a hitch. When I tried to open the projects with MAXQDA20 it imported the Speakers and created the corresponding codes, however, the text was missing. The Document Browser is empty except for the speaker's codes listed on the side (See attachment).

The only transfer it could make was the smallest project which was around 700 pages in Word.

And I have the latest version of MAXQDA20 (20.0.7)

What can I do, the only solution I came up with is trying to transfer my license back to 2018 version, because this way the new one doesn't work for me. So I would appreciate any suggestion for an alternative solution. I cannot make the data sets any smaller, and I don't know if it counts but the text is in Japanese.

Many thanks,
Dorothy Pihaj

i'm having a similar issue.

When i convert my MaxQDA 18 file into MaxQDA 2020, a few documents' texts gets fully erased. The codes remain but the documents are empty.

could you please fix that?

when i try converting my MaxQDA 2018 project into MaxQDA 2020, always some documents' contents get fully erased.

sometimes a few documents, sometimes more than ten documents get fully erased. the codes remain, but onto an empty document. moreover, in one or two documents, the text remains, but the codes get displaced -- from a small section of the text onto the whole document, for example.

i tried several ways to convert this file into MaxQDA 2020: as an mx18 file, as an mex file, as an mx12 file; by directly converting, by merging projects, by exporting--importing data. nothing fixes this problem.

it might be an issue in the MaxQDA 2020 conversion process. because the same error does not appear when i convert the file from mx18 into mex format. but it appears when i convert the mex (or mx18 or mx12) file into mx20.

could you please fix that? thank you.

Hi,

There were indeed certain issues related to the transition to MAXQDA 2020, which should be fixed in the recent update (MAXQDA 20.0.8 as of 04.29.2020). Please try to install the newest update by clicking ? > Search for updates on the top right of the MAXQDA window. I hope this helps, and if not, please try the below workaround:

1. Open mx18 in MAXQDA 2018
2. select "Save project as..." and save a copy of the project
3. open the project copy in MAXQDA2020

If it doesn't help to solve the conversion issue, we urgently request you to contact our support team via sending a ticket to us: https://www.maxqda.com/help-support/onlinesupport

We usually react within a day.

Best regards on behalf of MAXQDA support team,
