Should you attach comments or memos to your data segments?

Hi there,

When coding data we may be thinking about lots of things related to specific parts of our material. MAXQDA offers at least two possibilities to keep these thoughts that can facilitate further analysis: comments and memos. However, I am not sure about the pros and cons of using each one. When to use the one or the other? Which opportunities for further analysis does MAXQDA offer for comments? And for memos?

From the online manual I have learnt so far following:

Memos (https://www.maxqda.com/help-max18/memos/memos-attached-to-document-segments)
Short definition: “Post-It”-like notes with your ideas, comments, etc. to be attached to document segments
Visualisation: Memos can be easily recognized by their yellow icon next to the segments
Word limit: not set?
Display: To view (and edit) a memo, double-click with the left mouse button on the memo icon
Overview: Reports > Overview of memos

Comment (https://www.maxqda.com/help-max18/05-coding/creating-comments-for-coded-segments)
Short definition: A short comment for each of your coded segments
Visualisation: When a comment is attached, the inner circle appears in the same color as the outer line of the symbol.
Word limit: The comment can contain up to 255 characters
Display: At the end of the page or next to the text (click with the right mouse button on the document displayed in the “Document Browser” and select the Display comment column.)
Overview: Find all of your code comments in the “Overview of coded segments” table in the second column

The Comment looks like a quick brief note for the CODE in that particular part. Maybe as your coding you think the code is too broad and so Id make a Comment for myself as to a potential new code, and then at the end look at all my Comments. Memo's look more detailed, and can be applied to (among other things) segments of text int he transcript. It looks like both can be exported/printed somehow. I do agree, it's a little confusing as how to plan to use one instead of the other.

Also, if you add a Comment to a Code which has some text/image associated with it, and you delete the Code for that segment, the Comment is deleted along with the Code. I think a Comment can only go into a Code. On the other hand, a Memo can be added to text/image even if the segment has no Coded area assigned to it.
