What is…empowerment in the Global South?

We have received several questions about this semester’s #ResearchforChange theme, ‘fieldwork on empowerment initiatives in the Global South’. The notion of the Global South is seen by most scholars as more of a concept than a geographic delineation. The term is used fluidly and is often contested between different organizations and scholars. Because of this discrepancy, we will decide the relevancy of the research proposal on a case-by-case basis. The same goes for the term ’empowerment initiatives’. You are encouraged to describe the relevance and applicability of ‘Research for Change’ in the Letter of Motivation portion of your application. Let us know what it means to you and your research!

So, what if I am studying an empowerment initiative pertaining to the Global South, but I will be conducting my fieldwork in the Global North? Interviewing persons who have immigrated to my home country, for example. You are unfortunately not eligible this semester. Hopefully, we will be able to continue to provide MAXQDA Research Grants in the future with a wide variety of themes. Please feel free to click here to subscribe to our newsletter to be the first to hear about our latest projects, including MAXQDA Grants.

What is…the mobility scholarship?

The #ResearchforChange Grant has been specifically created to support student-researchers who are conducting qualitative or mixed methods fieldwork. The $800 cash mobility scholarship portion of the grant is to be used to help cover the costs incurred for travel and accommodation during the fieldwork process. The allocation of the funds is to be left to the discretion of the researcher.

So, what if you are a South-South researcher or researcher currently living in the Global South who does not plan on traveling abroad? You are eligible to apply as long as you are student/PhD candidate who is traveling (whether it be across the borders of nations or neighborhoods) to conduct fieldwork. We encourage you to specify how you will use the $800 mobility scholarship to aid your fieldwork process in the Research Proposal portion of your application. We will consider each proposal on a case-by-case basis.
