MaxQDA for scanned Comics?

02.05.2017, 14:46

Dear Community,
Does anyone have experience with using MaxQDA for lots of visual pfd-files, like scanned comics? I want to analyse at least about 40 scanned Micky-Mouse-comic-books that each consist oft about 15 pictures, that I have put together in pdf-files.

My sister, who is using MaxQDA for transcripted interviews, has tried it out with about 3 of my pdfs, and the program started to get really slow and some functions didn't work anymore at all. Does anyone have an idea how I could solve this problem? I haven't heard of any other program that supports the features I need for a qualitative analysis, but I'm not sure if MaxQDA is the rigt thing for pictures.

Thanks in advance!
Agi

Dear Agi,

Thanks for your interest in MAXQDA! Working with 40 PDFs is definitely not a problem per se, as I have seen many projects that exceed that number with no trouble whatsoever. Depending on the size of your files it could take longer to load them in the Document Browser (same way it'll take longer in any PDF viewer), but besides that, there should be no issues.

The one thing that doesn't work with PDFs (in MAXQDA or anywhere else as far as I know) are functions that rely on paragraphs or sentences, since technically the content-layer of a PDF knows neither paragraphs nor sentences (in the way that for example a Word-Document does).

You can learn more about PDFs in MAXQDA in our video tutorial:

http://www.maxqda.com/videos/working-with-pdf-files

Or in our Online-Help:

It would be very interesting for us to know why those PDFs take longer on your computer, and what other problems you are referring to. Would it be possible for you to contact our support directly and send them some of your PDF-files so we can run tests on them? You can do so by following this link:

Dear Andreas,
Thank you very very much for your fast and helpful reply!
I think the problem about my files is that they are really huge, since my pdfs consist only of colourful scans. I will try different ways to solve that problem, like compressing them a little. I just wanted to be assured at first, that MaxQDA is a good program for analysing images and not just words, so if it's worth buying the program :) I will retry it in a few days, and if I also face the problems my sister told me about, I will contact the support team and send them some files.
Thank you a lot!

.. thank you as well for your kind words! I have had very good experience with Adobe Acrobat Pro for such purposes, I think it's probably one of the best tools out there. We use https://tinypng.com/ for images, and it often has a huge effect. Maybe sites like https://smallpdf.com/ can also serve you well, but I have no personal experience with compressing PDFs online.

Good luck with your project!
