Hi Gerrie,
MAXQDA works with the philosohpy "one project = one file" and MAXQDA 10 uses files with the extension MX4. All documents that you are importing into the project will be saved inside this file together with memos, informations about the coded segments and so on.
We recommend that you save your MAXQDA files on your laptop while working with them, because MAXQDA needs to have "contact" with them all the time. If the file is opened from a network place and MAXQDA needs to write or read the file while the network is down, there could occur a problem. After working with the file you could copy and save it on a safe website.
Please note, that MAXQDA 10 allows you to import and code pictures and PDF files. If these files are bigger than the value you have set under "Project > Options" they won't be embedded in the project but will be stored in the MAXQDA externals folder. Of course this folder can be any network local place.
It is also possible to attach audio or video files to a document in the "Document System". These audio and video files are saved in the MAXQDA externals folder and are not be embedded in the project.
Best regards,
Stefan
