Retrieving graphics in pdf documents

Postby henlet on 30.11.2010, 19:42

I'm new to MaxQDA and having some pretty basic problems! I'm using it with Parallels 6 for Mac and Mac OS X 10.6.
When I tried to import a Word document (.doc or .docx) I got a message saying the file 'cannot be opened'. So I saved the file to rtf format. This opens OK in MaxQDA but has no graphics. So finally I saved it as a pdf. This can be imported and does keep its graphics. But I don't know how to code them. When I try to highlight the figure and code it, it doesn't appear in the retrieved segments.
Please can anyone help?
(The graphics in questions are graphs and charts)
Thank you!

Hi,

MAXQDA wasn't able to import the doc/docx file, because there is no Word installed in your windows installation on parallels.

We recommend to import the documents as RTF, as you did, not as a PDF, because you'll loose some functionality in this case. In the menue "Project > Options" you can choose, if objects (graphics) within a documnt should be imported or not.

If you create a new document in MAXQDA and the EDIT mode is on you could paste a document (including graphics) via the clipboard (copy and paste). Just press CTRL+V in the MAXQDA window "Document Browser".

If you have imported a document and would like to add a graphic later on into it, you can use the clipboard, too.

Best
Stefan

Many thanks Stefan. The 'copy and paste' into a new document worked well. Interestingly though, when I copied the Mac Word document (.docx) and pasted it into MaxQDA, it missed out the graphics again. But then I was able to copy the graphics separately from the .docx file and paste them into the new document. Strange. But now I have everything I need in MaxQDA and I'm ready to code!
Thank you again.
