Re-arranging initial and axial codes

04.12.2014, 16:43

Hi there,

I am using MAXQDA for my master's thesis using grounded theory approach to code my qualitative interviews.
First, I performed initial coding using line-by-line coding. Second, I coded larger segments by axial coding - under the four codes Condition, Action, Consequence and Interpretation. This resulted in an overwhelming number of codes (I have no sub-codes)

Is there a way where I can automatically make my initial codes into sub-codes of my axial codes? (As my axial codes are coding larger sections, these sections often include several initial codes, which I would like to be viewed as sub-codes.)

To illustrate:

This is what I have..
Condition
Capital intensive
Competition
Price war
Consequence
New entrants
Price war
Lower prices

And I want this:
Condition
-Capital intensive
-Competition
-Price war

Consequence
-New entrants
-Price war
-Lower prices

Thank you! :D

Hello Cathand!

MAXQDA allows you to activate a certain number of codes and move them as subcodes to a certain other code:

# Activate all codes that should become subcodes of another code, e.g. Capital intensive, Competition and Price war.
# Right-click on the code under which these codes should be subsumed, e.g. Codition. Choose "Move activated codes here" from the context menu.
# Procede in the same way with the other codes.
Best regards on behalf of the MAXQDA team,
