MAXdictio - 3. Coder

We want to show you especially vividly how MAXdictio can be used, so we prepared some exercises which are explained additionally with screenshots and comments. You can follow the examples yourself if you download the following MAXqda-file which contains the texts of the four gospels.

Vocabulary Analysis --- Creating a Dictionary --- MAXdictio Coder --- Exporting to Excel

In the third example, we want to investigate, how often the categories (e.g. "apostles", with the terms "John", "Mark", etc.) can be found in each of the gospels.

The MAXdictio Coder deals with this task. As the other categories are of no interest for us at the moment, we deactivate them in the dictionary (by double-clicking on the green icon next to the category).

The coder is accessible for the project, for selected text-groups, a text-set, or for single texts.

3

Subdivided texts the coder can count out very differentiated on every level. So, if we had subdivided the gospels by chapters, we could request a differentiated analysis for each chapter. To determine the depth of the level on which the analysis should take place, change the value in the field "Level".

4

The result of the coder is a matrix of the category-frequencies. The table can be assorted by selected columns or exported as whole matrix for further statistical analysis.

The table can be read as following:
"In the text 'Mark' of the text-group "Gospels" are 15.885 words. The apostles are named 34 times (we have allocated 5 terms to the category "Apostles")..."
